Head of User Experience (UX) Design
The New Hampshire Institute of Art (NHIA) seeks a forward-thinking designer with a demonstrated record of success as an entrepreneurial and innovative leader in academia, industry, or a combination of both, to serve as our inaugural Head of User Experience (UX) Design undergraduate degree program. This is a great opportunity for a design educator to shape the direction of an emerging new program and to build a department of national and international prominence.
The New Hampshire Institute of Art (NHIA) is a small, private, non-profit college offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in the visual arts, design, and creative writing. Founded almost 120 years ago, the college is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). NHIA is also a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) along with our peer institutions the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and Art Center College of Design, among others. NHIA has only recently begun to recruit students from beyond New England, and this year welcomed students from 26 states and 4 foreign countries as part of our increasingly diverse student population.
NHIA has identified expansion of its design programs as a priority in the college’s new strategic plan. The college has an existing Graphic Design program; NHIA would like to expand its design offerings to include new undergraduate, graduate, and professional extension programs focused on other aspects of design and design thinking. This includes a BFA in User Experience (UX) Design beginning in Fall 2018 and preliminary plans to add new programs in Design for Social Impact, Product Design, and Industrial Design in future years. The college also launched a new Certificate in Creative Placemaking in summer 2017.
Our new Head of User Experience Design will have the responsibility for developing the strategic and financial plan for this new degree program in consultation with the Dean of Undergraduate Studies. They will serve as NHIA’s ambassador with industry partners and the design community at large, oversee hiring of full-time and adjunct faculty, assist the President and college staff in fundraising activities, and support NHIA’s recruitment and marketing efforts to grow all design programs at the college. The Head of User Experience Design will teach five design courses per academic year in their area of expertise. Our ideal candidate will also possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, an expansive understanding of the design process and current trends in design education, and a minimum of five years of teaching or management experience; a terminal degree is preferred, but not required.
