Heide Solbrig is an interdisciplinary graphic novelist, media artist, communication scholar, documentary filmmaker, and teacher with a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of California, San Diego and an MFA in Information Arts/Conceptual Design from San Francisco State University. Her creative practice involves transmedia storytelling, incorporating comics, archival films, and the interactive apps and games. Her scholarship examines alternative, non-fiction comics, comic journalism and cross-platform media production as well as social-psychological films, orphan cinema, and documentary. Her documentary filmmaking—both self-directed and professionally commissioned—has engaged autobiography, social history, and the public sphere, resulting in works ranging from 5 to 90 minutes in length. She has taught fine arts, film and media production, media theory/ communication, new media production for over 15 years, in academic as well as studio/production contexts. Heide Solbrig is deeply invested in the multi-disciplinary project of teaching aspiring media workers to think through the civic culture, the public sphere and democracy in the contemporary digital era.
