“The Tell,” a phrase perhaps first popularized in the world of card sharks, has now been taken up by newscasters, would-be psychologists, writers, and painter Janet Bleicken. By reminding us of the stories that have lasted, many for thousands of years, Bleicken sets the scene where we might read between the lines and discover our own truth. This encompassing retrospective features landmark paintings from seven bodies of work, or seven eras of storytelling in Bleicken’s artistic career. Bleicken sources the content and imagery for her large-scale tapestry-form paintings and panels from fairytales, superstitions, myths, and religious stories. Some subject matter arises from local history such as the burning of Mount Monadnock in 1820, while other paintings examine more universal themes, such as the stories and superstitions that surround marriage. Bleicken lives and works in Hancock, New Hampshire, and has had a number of solo and group exhibitions throughout New England including at Boston University and the Currier Museum. She recently completed an exhibition at Irtus Gallery in Sutri, Italy.
