We are excited to welcome Jarret Middleton as our first Visiting Writer of the semester. Middleton will be reading from his brand-new novel Darkansas, which is a page-turning work of literary noir/horror steeped in the landscape of the Deep South, rich with suspense and teeming with gorgeous, gritty language. Garth Stein, author of the New York Times-bestselling The Art of Racing in the Rain, says that "Middleton’s brilliant debut is a vivid, haunting page-turner in the American Gothic tradition,” and Kathi Kirby of Powell’s Books says “This is a grand debut that pushes the limits of ‘Southern Gothic’ and delivers a dark and engrossing story of family, love, and fate.” The book appeared on Barnes and Noble’s list of Must-read Summer Indie Books, and was selected as a Must-read and Recommended August Book by the Chicago Review of Books and Volume 1 Brooklyn. As a publisher with Pharos Editions, an imprint of Cointerpoint Press, Middleton also brings a wide-ranging and insider’s knowledge of the publishing industry, and will be glad to answer questions on subjects related to that area as well. An NHIA Creative Writing BFA student will be the opening reader, and we welcome the public, especially anyone looking for their next book-club read.
