Sven Birkerts is one of our preeminent literary and cultural critics. Among his many books, The Gutenberg Elegies, published in 1994, is considered a near-classic; Birkerts was prescient in exploring the way our attention has shifted with the rise of the internet and online media, and in the 90s he was already interested in how we read differently when we are surrounded with such forces. He has written many books of essays and criticism, and his latest book, Changing the Subject: Art and Attention in the Internet Age, revisits this issue given the transformation in our daily lives of the past 20 years. It is scheduled to be published in October, so this will be one of his first readings/talks related to the book. Birkerts is also the editor for AGNI, published by Boston University, one of the top literary journals, and he heads up the MFA program in Creative Writing at Bennington College. This event is free and open to the public. There will be a reception from 5-6pm. Sven will read 6-7pm. For more information contact NHIA.
