Art Education
Artist • Educator • Collaborator • Contributor
The Art Education certification program is based upon the philosophy that the arts have a place in everyone’s life. Practicing artists who choose to teach are more effective at impressing this value to their students because their subject matter is an intimate part of their lives. Artist educators are personally and professionally skilled in creativity and synthesis, two of the most important 21st century skills to ensure student achievement in our rapidly changing world.
The New Hampshire Institute of Art is proud to offer its students the option of earning K – 12 art educator credentials in New Hampshire with reciprocity in a majority of states across the country. This post-baccalaureate Art Education certification program, approved by New Hampshire’s Department of Education and Post Secondary Commission, requires a fifth year of coursework and culminating fieldwork in elementary and secondary schools. The program prepares and supports its candidates as collegial educators and artists throughout their careers.
The Art Educator program is based upon the philosophy that practicing artists make better educators and should complement our BFA curriculum rather than replace it. The program requires candidates to complete some education coursework, including 110 hours of early fieldwork, during their first four years. Art Educator candidates are also required to take studio courses in all other concentrations. The breadth of artistic skill and knowledge expected of a K - 12 Art Educator is enormous given all the possible art forms, art historical references, and material safety practices. The use of a competency-based assessment system in the studio, in education classes and from experiences in the field promotes and fosters art educators that are more confident, versatile and competent working in a variety of media.
