mmills@nhia.eduWork in clay is an extraordinary synthesis of two- and three-dimensional ideas. It is expressed in two major traditions: works of sculpture and works of utility. Through a rigorous investigation of ceramics and sculpture mediums, students become familiar with the techniques, forms, and expressions of both these traditions. At the same time, they discover strengths, develop personal sensibilities, and define artistic style.
The Ceramics program provides students with a firm foundation in a variety of ceramic materials and processes, including handbuilding, molding, throwing, glazing, and firing. Students explore abstract and conceptual references and are introduced to various ceramic materials and equipment. Assignments develop creative skills through a variety of working processes.
