The ceramics tradition of both sculptural and functional forms is as old as history itself, and the sophistication of civilizations has been judged by the ceramic artifacts attributed to them. It is not without this extensive historical support that students who choose to concentrate in ceramics embark on a rich journey to make their mark in time.
Beginning with a firm foundation in ceramic processes, students pursue a rigorous investigation of wheel working and hand building techniques, becoming familiar with forms of abstract, conceptual and traditional work. Incorporating technique, aesthetics, and criticism into their studio practice establishes the goal of developing individual strengths and defining a personal vocabulary and artistic style. Additionally, students build skills toward professional development by sharing responsibility for developing an understanding of higher level studio practices, including clay and glaze materials and kiln firing.
