2010 Certificate Application

Certificate Programs are offered in Painting, Ceramics, Interior Design and Photography. The Institute’s Certificate Program is designed as a two-year, intensive study in which students take a series of required studio and lecture courses that provide a solid foundation, while elective courses allow students to explore topics of special interest within the program. It is structured to help students acquire the technical and creative skills necessary to begin working towards developing an independent body of work. Upon successful completion of the sequence of courses, a certificate of accomplishment is awarded in each area of study.

History of the Institute Certificate Program

The Institute’s two-year Certificate Program was inaugurated in 1984 under the guidance of Gary Samson, Photography Department Chairperson. His inspiration, dedication, passion, and commitment provided students interested in photography with an engaging and focused curriculum of study in photography. The success of the Photography Certificate Program was the incentive for the addition of certificate programs in Painting, Ceramics, and Interior Design. Furniture Making was added in 2007 in conjunction with the New Hampshire Institute of Furniture Making (NHIFM).

Philosophy

The program provides adult students with a focused and structured program of study in their desired area. Students learn through lectures, class discussions, in-class assignments, group critiques, individual critiques, and assigned homework. Classes are small and taught by experienced faculty. This provides a learning environment where students have the opportunity to excel and acquire hands-on experience. In the final year creative exploration is encouraged and designed to support the development of an evolving personal body of work for the graduation exhibition.

Program of Study

The Certificate Program is a non-degree/non-credit, part time course of study. Not all programs have the same requirements. Please review the curriculum of study under each Certificate Program for specifics. Students who have successfully completed the program and are interested in applying to the BFA program are subject to transfer review, restrictions by the Admissions Office, and a portfolio review by a Department Chairperson. Up to 12 credits may be accepted towards the New Hampshire Institute of Art BFA program. Students interested in a portfolio review should contact the Admissions Office at (603) 836-2576. The granting of credit is determined by the Admissions Office at the time of application to the BFA program. Enrollment in the Certificate Program is not a guarantee of acceptance to the BFA program or the award of credit.
