Teaching Philosophy
I have been photographing inside and out of the home for many years. I am interested in how domestic settings become revealing stage sets; and in the emotional jilt that comes from the mixture of solace with unease, feigning with facts of reality, serenity with ambivalence. The home is a retreat, a shelter to fantasize in and decorate; it can also be the arena where we find ourselves most vulnerable. I like to combine narrative layers and offer the viewer an opportunity to visit and observe when something is revealed, seeking to capture a suspended moment of strength, susceptibility, playfulness. I may add in a slide or props to push the juxtapositions and contradictions expressed. Photography is about time. Time to grasp the most revealing light. Time to interact with one’s environment. Always to separate from the day-to-day truths, using the light, time, and lens to edit those truths.
