Teaching Philosophy
Joel Gill left the comforting confines of the mountains of Southwestern Virginia after receiving his BA in Fine Art from Roanoke College and an Associates in Graphic Design from Virginia Western Community College. He received his MFA in Painting from Boston University in 2004. Since that time he has continued to work as an artist, and teacher sharing and expanding his modes of expression. He is the recipient of a number of awards and has had success in solo and groups shows. He describes his work this way: "A poet once wrote that he wanted to create an art so transparent that you could look through it and see the world. It is my goal to use what ever medium I can to create my own looking glass. I am looking at and taking in as much information from our culture as possible in order to create an unconscious reservoir of inspiration. I am using my interest, ability, ideas and knowledge to deliberately tap into new ways to use formal and contemporary issue in art. All my efforts are done with a belief that I will create a body of work that is so transparent that one can look through it and see me."
