Teaching Philosophy
My ongoing goal is to paint a woman for the 21st century. As artifacts of female self-observation, I see these works as inverting the art-historical “male gaze.” The inversion, however, is not absolute: the viewer may still be a voyeur to my self-observation. I choose poses and costumes that enhance this tension. Almost sexual, almost athletic, both heroic and tender, and at times exhibitionist, the self-portraits represent a liminal space where psycho-social dynamics surrounding the female body are in flux.
