Teaching Philosophy
I choose to explore contradictions and absurdities in America’s inhabited spaces through painting. I am interested in the visual relationship between man-made and natural environments and the cultural commentary that it generates. I am constantly questioning whether the human imprint can be simultaneously destructive and visually appealing and find myself attracted to spaces that provide contradictory arguments. The paintings provide a conflicting sense of aesthetic beauty and rigid construction, specificity and generality, transience and permanence. Each painting describes a specific place and time I have encountered and from these memories I am able to transform the imagery into a unique language of color and abstracted space. While the scenes I create are predominantly autobiographical, they exert a sense of nostalgia and familiarity that I find to be universal in modern America.
