Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is based on sixteen years of practical and successful experience at the college level in the classroom/art studio. My role is to identify the student-artist’s natural abilities and provide a directed environment that guides their development as an artist in a challenging, creative, and technically correct way. My experience indicates that properly structured group critiques are the most effective method of developing the student-artist’s confidence, creativity, and ability to communicate. My students’ response to these critiques has been more than positive; they feel this activity has been one of the most valuable contributions to their artistic development. The classroom/art studio should be a microcosm of the professional art world. Legitimate artists are not in competition with each other; they are a support for each other and are catalysts for the exchange of creative ideas. It’s difficult for artists to exist in a vacuum. In the end good art, honest art, rewards it’s creator and inspires the rest of us.
